2023 Zinck’s Night in Tokyo and Kansai, Oct. 19

Zinck’s Night, an annual tradition that unites our Cornell alumni throughout the world each year, recently saw two unforgettable gatherings in Japan.

27 alumni, family, and friends gathered at the new Dusit Thani Kyoto hotel to celebrate Zinck’s Night in Kansai.

They enjoyed a tour of the guest rooms, main bar, and restaurants prior to the dinner, where former Cornell Club of Japan president Chiaki Tanuma made the opening toast.

Alumni came from as far away as Tokyo and Kagoshima, and were joined by staff, faculty, and 4 Class of 2023 graduates of the Cornell-Kyoto University joint MMH/MBA program.

The closing speech was made by former Cornell Hotel Society Kansai president Seiji Tanaka.

Simultaneously in Tokyo, 54 alumni gathered for Zinck’s Night, at a BBQ joint in Tokyo, which brought together both recent and older graduates. The Midtown BBQ Tokyo buzzed with the nostalgia and laughter of former classmates as they reminisced about their college days, made new friends, and enjoyed a pleasant Fall evening near the Tokyo Dome.

These dual celebrations on the same night underscored the enduring bonds formed thanks to our alma mater, transcending borders and miles, serving as a testament to the power of education to unite people across cultures and ages, and reaffirming the importance of connection for years to come.

Zinck’s Night continues to be a beacon of connection for Cornell alumni worldwide, reminding us that, no matter where life takes us, we are forever part of a tight-knit community.

THE HISTORY BEHIND THE INTERNATIONAL SPIRIT OF ZINCK’S NIGHT. HOW IT ALL BEGAN.
“We’ll all have drinks at Theodore Zinck’s, when I get back next fall!” goes “Give My Regards to Davy,” the timeless Cornell fighting song. But just who exactly is Theodore Zinck?

Theodore Zinck was an Ithaca saloon owner whose pub, the Hotel Brunswick, was a popular haunt for Cornellians in the 1890s. When he died in 1903, a series of bars on and around Collegetown adopted his name over the years. The last one closed in the 1960s, and Cornellians started commemorating the spirit of Zinck’s Night by gathering at an establishment on a Thursday night, once a year. This tradition of undergraduates coming together to enjoy camaraderie and refreshments has grown into a gathering for Cornellians of all stripes everywhere.

Aug 27th Summer Family Gathering 2023

The first summer family gathering event after COVID!

Cornellians and their family and friends enjoyed bowling together in the air-conditioned bowling arena of the Prince Hotel next to Tokyo Tower, while it was a steamy 35°C outside. It was the first family gathering event post COVID so Cornellians were very excited to meet fellow alum and their families after 4 years! Cornell souvenirs were given to every attendees (in the order of lowest- to highest-scoring lol) and everyone delightfully accepted the little surprise.

Please check out our website for future event info as well!

About 25 alumni and current students gathered together for a fun, casual evening at the Hobgoblin Roppongi, located in Tokyo, Japan, this past Thursday, July 14th. This was our first in-person Happy Hour in about 2 years, since Covid-19 prevented such in-person events. It was such a pleasant evening connecting with both old and new alumni friends. Please stay tuned as we hope to once again hold regular monthly Happy Hours.
